Discover the Historic Charm and Panoramic Views of Alleppey’s Iconic Coastal Landmark

About This Activity

The Alappuzha Lighthouse, also known as the Alleppey Lighthouse, is a historic beacon standing proudly along the Arabian Sea coast in the coastal town of Alappuzha, Kerala. Erected in 1862 during the reign of the Travancore kings, it is one of the oldest lighthouses on India’s southwest coast and the first of its kind on Kerala’s Arabian Sea shoreline. Located just 4 km from the main town near Alappuzha Beach, this 30-meter-tall structure, built with laterite stones and teak, is a striking landmark painted in iconic red and white bands since 2000.

The teak spiral staircase, with over 100 steep steps, leads to a viewing gallery offering breathtaking 360-degree views of the Arabian Sea, backwaters, and Alleppey Beach. A small museum, opened in 2007, displays maritime artifacts like vintage oil lamps and navigational tools, narrating Alappuzha’s spice trade past. Open Tuesday to Sunday, entry is INR 20 for Indian adults, INR 50 for foreigners, and INR 10 for children. The lighthouse’s coastal charm, coupled with nearby backwater cruises and bustling markets, makes it a must-visit. Despite the challenging climb, its panoramic vistas and cultural significance captivate history buffs, photographers, and travelers, embodying Alappuzha’s title as the “Venice of the East.”
